Boston (NBC) - More than 160 passengers and crew members on board a whale watching boat are back on solid ground after an unexpected night at sea off the coast of Massachusetts.

A four hour whale watching tour turned into a 14 hour ordeal.

The problems started as the tour was headed back to Boston Harbor and one of the boats propellers got tangled-up in a massive rope anchoring a lobster trap.

"A vibration went down the whole ship that as it caught the line," said Craig Colter, a passenger. "You knew instantly that something had snagged or grabbed it."

Divers were called in, but when they couldn't free the vessel, three Coast Guard ships came in to provide security and to have a medical team in place if needed.

Passengers were given food, water and blankets as the 83-foot boat became a makeshift campsite.
