DELAND, FL (WKMG/CNN) - A mother's attempt at shoplifting ended with her running from police and leaving her two crying children at the store.

Rebecca Stoltz, 26, is facing child abuse charges in addition to petty shoplifting after a trip to Walmart with her 6-year-old daughter and 9-year-old step-daughter.

Security personnel caught her allegedly trying to steal $44 worth of clothing.

Police said Stoltz ran from the store and left her kids behind. Security found the girls, and both were "clearly distressed and very emotional, and both were crying."

"Just the worst thing you could ever do to just steal and then leave them," shopper Patrick Mills said. "Honestly, that's not even thinking about your children. You're not doing it for your children, obviously, if you're just going to leave them in the store."

Stoltz told a friend to go pick up her daughters. The friend who came to get the girls gave police a number to call their mother.

When Stoltz finally came back to the Walmart, she turned herself over.
