Bill McGillis speaks on program's future with Conference USA

Eight founding members of the C-USA have moved on to difference conferences. The most recent are the Tulane Green Wave, who have since joined the American Athletic Conference.

I asked Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis, if the Golden Eagles will ever be the ninth program to follow suit.

"We're in Conference USA and our mission needs to become the best in Conference USA and we're not the best right now. We were at one time and we need to get back to that level."

"I think this league can become far better than people think. There is a branding problem with this league because there are so many young and so many new programs," said McGillis.

"Let's firm up our financial foundation, build our fan base and position ourselves for a bigger future. Our aspiration, let me clear, is to play at the highest level of Division-I athletics in the very best conference that we can play in and it remains to be seen where that is."

"I'm going to be working everyday and everybody on this campus, I think certainly in the athletic department, will be working everyday to build a championship program in Conference USA while we're in it, while positioning ourselves for success beyond Conference USA."

Southern Miss and UAB are the only founding members still in the league. It was formed in 1995.
