HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A local retailer is doing its part to help some deserving children get off to a good start this school year. Academy Sports + Outdoors hosted an annual back-to-school event for 30 selected kids and their families from the YMCA in Hattiesburg.
Each child was given a $100 gift card, which they used to buy uniforms, shoes, backpacks and other items.
"They come in and they get a backpack or a pair of shoes or whatever it is they need to kick off the school year right and we're so glad to be a part of it," said Louis Tenney, store director.
"Some parents have more than one child, so I think it's always a plus to have that decision, $100 will definitely help," said Celeste Jones, a shopper who was buying supplies for her son.
"$100 is a savings, because he has to have uniforms, and we have to get at least pants, shirts, shorts and he has to have all of that and book bags, so it's a big help for us," said Evelyn Conerly, who was shopping for her grandson.
This is the fifth year for the retailer to help out with back-to-school at 60 of its stores in the south and midwest.
