LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Several Laurel children are now more familiar and prepared for emergency situations thanks to the American Red Cross and the Laurel Housing Authority.
A pillowcase project was held at the James A. Townley Community Resource Center. Children from the housing community learned more about fire safety, emergency preparedness and making a plan in case a disaster occurs. Each youth took home a pillowcase and a few items to start their personal emergency supply kit.
"To us it's very important that the kids in our community are involved and especially during summer months have some place to come, have some place to go and you know be directed towards positive activities and so forth," said Laurel Housing Authority Program Coordinator Barbara Gavin.
The pillowcase project started as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
