Laurel giving examination for entry-level police officer position

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

If you want to make a difference in your community, you may want to consider becoming a police officer.

The City of Laurel will be giving a Civil Service Examination for the position of Entry-Level Police Officer August 16 at 9 a.m. at the Laurel Police Training Center located at 930 Hillcrest Drive.

“This test will be good for at least two years,” said Captain Tommy Cox. “Anybody that’s thinking about joining the Laurel Police Department, if they are not prior service, then they’re going to need to take advantage of this,” said Cox.

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  •     At least 21 years of age
  •     Valid MS driver’s license
  •     High School diploma or GED
  •     U. S. Citizen and registered voter in the county where you reside
  •     Able to pass a background check
  •     Able to pass Entry-Level Police Officer Civil Service Examination
  •     Able to attend and complete MS Law Enforcement Officer Training Academy


Beginning Salary:  $15.57 per hour/$34,814.00 annually

  •     Driver’s license
  •     High School diploma or GED
  •     Voter Registration Card
  •     DD-214 (if applicable)

Applications may be picked up in at City Hall inside the Human Resources Office, Room #304 between the hours of 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. 

“This is a written test, an entry-level test that we offer and gets your foot in the door and gets you in the process of hopefully becoming a police officer,” said Cox.

Cox encourages people who come from all walks of life to apply. Diversity is very important for the department.

Application and required documents must be returned on or before August 8 at 5 p.m.
