NEWTON, IA (KCCI/CNN) – The 100 roses on Dorothy Pickett’s table are a clue – this week is big for her.

“Well, I’ve seen a lot of changes,” Pickett said.

Living on your own and walking to your 100th birthday party is amazing.

"We’ve been best friends for 72 years,” Pickett said to her best friend, Florence Koppen.

But even wilder is celebrating with a friend, who also just turned 100 years old. Just like Pickett, Koppen might be 100, but she says she feels as young as a person half her age.

“I don’t know – maybe 50,” Koppen said.

So, what’s their secret?

“I didn’t stay at home,” Pickett said. “I went as much as I could.”

Both will tell you they still make a point of staying active.

“I’ve always worked hard,” Koppen said. “[I] picked corn and all that kind of stuff.”

“I ride the cycle every morning,” Pickett said. “Well, not every morning, but at least four or five days a week.”

Both agree there’s power in coffee time with friend and laughing, but neither ate walnuts daily, focused on purple foods or took vitamin D.

"No. I eat what I want to eat. If it doesn't agree with me, I don't eat it. But I just eat about anything I want to eat really," Pickett said.

And getting good rest wasn’t always a priority.

“I’m in best by 10, but I’ve done a lot of dancing in my life, so I’ve had action,” Koppen said.

So why are the girls born in 1914 still active in 2014? Because their combined 200 years have been filled with family, friends and 100 years of movement.
