Joe's Viewpoint: State Tax Holiday

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The state tax holiday begins this Friday at 12 am and continues until Saturday at midnight. The tax holiday is designed to help families purchase clothing and footwear items for students returning to school. It only applies to clothing and footwear items priced at $100 or less. So, don't forget to take advantage of this savings. While I think this is a good thing, I do not think it goes far enough. There too many other items like backpacks, calculators and notebooks to name a few. These items can really add up. I also think it would be good to have a hurricane preparedness tax free holiday for items we all purchase in preparation for storm season - like batteries, flashlights, coolers, tarps and generators. Our legislators should consider expanding the school tax holiday and adding one for storm preparation.

This is today's viewpoint.
