Hundreds turn out for Community Backpack Giveaway

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of kids joined by their parents gathered at Life Church in Laurel for a little help in starting off the school year.

The church held its first Community Backpack Giveaway supplying 500 kids with backpacks along with school supplies. The backpacks were purchased through a school supply ministry in Florida and came in a variety of colors and sizes for kids in grades K-12.

“It was amazing, it’s like, they just knew that some people out here need it, they was helpful and all that,” said Shanita Horne.

Around 50 volunteers helped distribute backpacks, fill them with supplies and encourage the kids to have a great school year. Some of the supplies included; paper, pencils, erasers, highlighters, glue sticks, crayons and scissors.

“Today is just really special, because the church, they just do stuff to help people out,” said Shayann Gibbs.

“With all the books kids have to carry these days, a backpack is a necessity, plus school supplies are a bonus,” said Milton Stennett, director of Children’s Ministry at Life Church.

Each child that left was given a high five and a hug so no one left without a smile.
