MIZE, MS (WDAM) -

An annual Smith County festival which celebrates a favorite fruit and benefits a local fire department is taking place this weekend...rain or shine. The 36th Mississippi Watermelon Festival began with a talent show Friday night. Saturday, the event will continue with arts and crafts, a car show and watermelon eating contests.

Proceeds benefit the Mize Volunteer Fire Dept.

Highlighting the day will be a concert from country music star Aaron Tippin, who will perform no matter what the weather does.

"We have an inside stage in the (fire dept.) bays that we will go to," said Terresa Stewart, festival organizer. "A lot of the crowd may be in the rain, but we do have a backup plan. We will be going on as planned," she said.

This year, funds from the festival will be used to help the fire department purchase a thermal-imaging camera.
