Southern Miss Picked to Finish Fifth in Conference USA West Division

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football has been chosen to finish fifth in the Conference USA West Division race this fall in a vote by the league's 13 coaches and released Wednesday by the league office in Irving, Texas.

The Golden Eagles, which moves to the West this season after being in the East since the league was split into two divisions prior to the 2005 campaign, is expected to finish behind projected division champion North Texas with 68 points, closely followed by Rice (65) and UTSA (62). Louisiana Tech earned 38 points for a fourth-place showing, followed by Southern Miss (24) and UTEP (18).

Marshall (91 points) was unanimously chosen as the preseason favorite to win the East Division, followed by Middle Tennessee (73), Florida Atlantic (60), WKU (57), Old Dominion (33), UAB (31) and FIU (19).

The 10th annual Conference USA Football Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West divisions, will be held Saturday, Dec. 6.

The 2014 C-USA Football season kicks off Friday, Aug. 29, with a pair of non-conference games. All 13 of the league's teams are in action during opening weekend, with nine games scheduled to air on national or regional television.
