(WMC) - Tuesday the St. Francis Levee Board voted unanimously to open up access to the Mississippi River levees in Arkansas.

This is a good sign for supporters of the Big River Initiative and the Harahan Bridge Project. The newly opened levees could soon be paved over and turned into a cycling and running paradise.

The project would connect to Memphis via a pedestrian-cycling walkway being added to the Harahan Bridge across the Mississippi River.

Now the fund raising begins to create a limestone pathway from West Memphis to Marianna, Arkansas: the levee project first phase.

The dream is to open the pedestrian cycling bridge addition and the Big River Parkway from Memphis to New Orleans by Spring 2016.

In the meantime, brush up on your cycling safety with this slideshow.
