Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp at Camp Ita Kana in South Forrest County has kicked off their first week of fun.
The camp is for both adults and children with significant disabilities. During the week session they experience camp first hand. From staying in cabins to various activities.
The activities include: swimming, arts and crafts, fishing, horseback riding and boating.
The children session began yesterday and on Monday adults arrive for their week long session.
The camp is run strictly by volunteers including 90 teen counselors and 85 other staff members. Each teen counselor is paired with one child for the week. All volunteers give up a week of their time to work with people with significant disabilities.
The camp was founded by Abbie Rogers in 1961. She ran the camp till her death in 2007. Her legacy and community outreach lives on.
