HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg will use a $250,000 grant from the National League of Cities to implement an outreach program to increase enrollment in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.

Hattiesburg is one of eight cities across the nation to receive a similar grant from the NLC.

The money, along with technical assistance, will help implement the city's E-3 (Educate, Enroll and Empower) Health Initiative.  The goal of that program is to reduce the number of uninsured children and families by 50 percent.

Tuesday, stakeholders in the E-3 program were officially informed that Hattiesburg had received the grant during an appreciation luncheon at the C.E. Roy Community Center.

Also recently, the City of Hattiesburg won the 2014 Mississippi Municipal League "City Spirit" Excellence Award for its efforts to establish a city employee health clinic and a community health day.
