HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

All Highway 49 lanes affected by a semitrailer accident in Hattiesburg on Monday were reopened to motorists Tuesday afternoon. The left lane of I-59 southbound remains open while the right lane is closed. In addition, the ramp from Hwy 49 north to I-59 south remains closed as crews continue inspections.

MDOT crews successfully removed a wedged trackhoe from an overpass after a semitrailer accident on Highway 49 in Hattiesburg Monday morning.

A semitrailer toting a trackhoe was driving on Highway 49 when it hit the Interstate 59 overpass in Hattiesburg near Exit 67.  The trackhoe struck the overpass and became wedged.

MDOT requested assistance from bridge structural specialists in Jackson to inspect the damage to the overpass as well as advise on how to remove the trackhoe from the bridge safely. The inspection regarding the extent of the damage is ongoing.

According to MDOT, crews used two semitrailers to push and pull from either side of the trackhoe in order to loosen it from the concrete.

Around 3 p.m. Monday the trackhoe was successfully removed, leaving a gaping hole in the overpass of I-59.
