A famed New York photographer who took iconic pictures of the civil rights movement in the 1960s was guest of honor in the Hub City Saturday at a family reunion featuring many of the people he photographed 50 years ago.

Herbert Randall spoke at a biennial Hicks/Mott Family Reunion at the Sherrill Community Center.

Randall first visited Hattiesburg in 1964 and helped document Mississippi Freedom Summer through his photos. Many members of the Hicks and Mott families were photographed by Randall during that time.

Others played important roles in the local civil rights movement.

"To see young people who you photographed then and who you saw but you didn't really know, to see them as adults and productive adults, it's amazing," Randall said.

"We wanted him to share his story and share the significance of being in Hattiesburg in 1964," said Lillie Dwight, a member of the Hicks/Mott family who organized the reunion. "Really, the story of Hattiesburg (in Freedom Summer) is a very important story and it's a unique story," she said.

Randall was among those at the reunion who also received a medallion honoring him as a "Freedom Summer Trailblazer."
