School is out, the weather is hot and people are starting to become lazy and lackadaisical. Now is the perfect time to host a pool party. If you want to do something more than just a poolside barbecue or luau, then here are some unique, pool party ideas your friends will surely love:

Movie Night

Transform the usual movie night into a pool event that's perfect for the summer. Start by picking up a bunch of inflatable, floating lounge chairs or floating tubes at a sporting goods store or local retailer. You now have the option of bringing your 52-inch plasma out from the living room, but you probably don't want to see one of your most prized possessions short- circuit from splashing pool water.

If you're worried about damaging your TV, consider borrowing or renting a projector and projector screen. You can keep the projector well away from the water, and the projector screen should be able to handle a couple of errant splashes. Hook-up the projector to a DVD or Blu-Ray player and enjoy some of your favorite movies with friends as you all lounge in or around the pool.

Here is a checklist for a summer movie night in the pool:

Inflatable, floating lounge chairs or floating tubes for seating inside the pool.
Plastic or foldable seats for seating around the pool.
TV or projector with a projector screen.
DVD or Blu-Ray player with movies that everyone will enjoy.
Food, drinks and other refreshments you'd find at your local movie theater. Don't forget the popcorn!

Pool Sports Party

Summer is a great time for having a game day at the park. The sunny weather is perfect for a fun-filled day of baseball, basketball, volleyball and just about any other outdoor sport. But, you know what tops playing sports in the park on a hot summer day? Playing all those sports...in a pool!

Plan a sports day for your next summer pool party that your friends will love. Just visit your local sporting goods store or check online for any equipment you might need. You'll be surprised of how many swimming pool versions of sporting good items exist. Here is a quick list of each sport and pool items needed:

Pool baseball: You can start with inflatable bats and balls for less experienced players. For a serious game of pool baseball, you might want to pick up bats, gloves and mitts that are specially designed for the swimming pool. You can come up with your own rules or search online for any specific guidelines.

Pool volleyball: This is a much more common pool sport. All you need is a net that goes above and across your swimming pool and volleyball. Use an inflatable ball for less experienced players.

Pool basketball: You can easily find a floating basketball hoop, or a hoop designed to sit near the edge of a swimming pool at any sporting goods store. You'll want to use a soft or inflatable basketball that can be easily gripped with one hand.

Water polo: An obvious choice for a pool sports party is water polo. It only requires two, small hockey nets and a water polo ball to play. You can opt for an inflatable, or spongy ball to avoid the nose bleeds from hard throws.

Water Wars

Splash fights and water gun shoot outs are commonplace at most pool parties. Why not take these age old-traditions to the next level with a full-scaled water war. After the guests have all arrived and everyone is fed, start handing out the munitions and allow the carnage to ensue.

Necessary equipment:

Water balloons
Squirt guns
Inflatable pool squirters
Water pump toys
Garden hose (just in case)

Possible games:

Water balloon tag: Those who aren't "it" don't get any water balloons and must run for dear life. Use a water balloon splash in place of a regular tag. That way, everyone will want to be "it."

Capture the flag: With the pool as the safe zone, start a game of capture the flag with each player armed with a squirt gun and several water balloons, and watch as the combatants get completely soaked.

Water bombing: Draw straws to select three "bombers," then throw everyone else in the pool. With blindfolds on or their backs to the pool, have the "bombers" start dropping water balloon bombs on the pool victims. If a person gets splashed by a water balloon, they're out of the pool. Last three people left in the pool get to be the "bombers" for the next round.

Water wars: Not much organization needed for this game. Equip your guests with squirt guns and a limited amount of water balloons. Do not allow anyone to use their water weapons until you decide. Use a whistle to signal a water fight whenever you please. Just imagine signaling a water fight while people are eating, or as new guests are arriving - pandemonium. Assign teams to make things a little more interesting.
