Police ID body found in car in Fayetteville parking lot

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville Police officers are investigating a death after a body was recovered in the back of a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Thursday night.

Officers were dispatched around 9:42 p.m. Thursday to the Value Place located at 770 W. Rowan St. in reference to suspicious activity.

A caller told dispatchers that it appeared that a man had place an unconscious person in the rear of a gray compact car.

While officers were responding to the scene, the vehicle left the parking lot of Value Place. Officers canvassed the area and located the vehicle in the rear parking lot of Highsmith Rainey Express Care located at 150 Robeson St.

Officers discovered a deceased man in the rear passenger area of the Malibu. Officers also learned that a man was seen walking away from the car shortly after leaving it in the parking lot.

The deceased person has been identified as Christopher Pope, 23, of Dunn.

The Malibu is registered to an address in Dunn.

Pope's body will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Raleigh and an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
