CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) -

We're often told sharks only need a few feet of water to swim in… keeping beach goers on their toes. A man relaxing on Carolina Beach proved this to be true when he captured footage of some fishermen catching a 60-pound shark just feet away from other swimmers.

YouTube user kmcgee6969 uploaded the nearly 16-minute video on July 6 showing a group of fishermen reeling something in while standing on the beach.

The first ten minutes of the video shows the men struggling to reel the shark in, before finally pulling it onto the beach.

The final few minutes are quite nerve-racking as the men attempt to get the hook out of the shark's mouth without losing any fingers!

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you've either accidentally or intentionally caught a shark, here are some tips on how to maximize shark survivability from the NOAA Fisheries Service:

  • Use non-offset Circle Hooks which are easier to remove than J hooks.
  • Minimize physical handling as sharks do not have bones to protect their internal organs so injury is more likely.
  • Avoid dragging the shark on dry sand or on a boat deck.
  • Placing a towel soaked in seawater over the eyes may help pacify the shark.
  • If the hook is swallowed, cut the line as close to the mouth as possible.
  • Have heavy tackle and a fighting harness on hand to prevent a long fight.
