Joe's Viewpoint: Local University Accomplishments

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Congratulations to the University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University and Hattiesburg for their recent rankings in national studies. Southern Miss and the City of Hattiesburg are ranked 24 in the top 50 most-affordable college towns in the US based on a cost of living index considering factors such as grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation and healthcare. William Carey ranked 68 out of over 1200 in a study measuring the academic standings of new students, the total cost of attendance, and the employment levels of graduates entering the job market. Both ranked the highest of all Mississippi universities in their respective surveys. We should be proud of what University Presidents Dr. King and Dr. Bennett have accomplished along with the faculties and staffs. This is great news for them, for us and for the future of our community.

This is today's viewpoint.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
