Byrd Boulevard Extension construction underway in Petal

PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The Byrd Boulevard Extension Project is underway in Petal which will connect the Evelyn Gandy Parkway to Old Richton Road.

It's about 1.1 miles in length and unreachable land will be open for development.

Funding for the project began back in 2004 and is a mix of federal-state and city money. It will cost nearly 2 million dollars and is expected to be completed sometime in October.

Work started earlier this year and currently, the land is being cleared, graded and proper drainage put in.

It is zoned for both commercial and residential development. Byrd Boulevard is named after the city's first mayor, Ulmer Byrd.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
