LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A little more than two months after he was arrested on a family violence charge, Andy Pittman, the former senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Lufkin, accepted a plea bargain deal of 12 months of probation.

Pittman appeared in County-Court-at-Law Judge Bob Inselmann’s courtroom Tuesday morning. As part of the deal, Pittman pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury-family violence.

Johanna Curry, a spokeswoman for the county attorney’s office, said in addition to the 12-month of deferred adjudication, which is basically probation, Pittman will have to pay a $500 fine and $258 in court costs. He will also be required to attend a batterer’s prevention program and a substance abuse evaluation.

Pittman will also be required to do 100 hours of community service and donate $100 to the Family Crisis Center.

A staff member at the First Baptist Church of Lufkin confirmed that Pittman has resigned from his position as the church’s senior pastor.

Lufkin Police officers arrested Pittman on May 6.

According to police, Pittman and a woman living at the home acknowledged they had been in an argument that resulted in Pittman pushing the woman into a door.

Police say she did not have visible injuries but did complain of pain in her arm. The woman said she did not want Pittman to be arrested.

"Unfortunately, when it comes to family violence our hands get tied," Lufkin Police spokesman David Casper said in a previous East Texas News story.

The initial 911 call came in from a second family member who was home at the time of the alleged incident.

"We're all caught off guard right now," said Aubrey Knox, the associate pastor at the church. "Our biggest concern is to pray for them. Hopefully there can be restoration in this. At this point we don't know what to do."
