AMITE, LA (WAFB) - Residents in Tangipahoa Parish can breathe a little easier after deputies captures a man that escaped from the parish jail Sunday night.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards held a news conference Tuesday morning to discuss details surrounding the escape..

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said Verdale Moore, 24, of Hammond, escaped from the parish jail in Amite.

Edwards said Moore broke out using a piece of metal from a bunk bed. He added the inmate made an eight-inch hole and escaped through it. According to the sheriff, Moore used a cell phone and got a ride to Mississippi. He is now in maximum security and will face charges for the escape.

Edwards added the part of the prison where the escape happened is the oldest part of the jail. To fix the problem, deputies put a steel wall up in that area and they just ordered two new bunk beds to get rid of metal.

Edwards says the parish needs a new jail, something voters rejected.

"We educated the voters on this last fall," said Edwards. "The Tangi government offered a tax to build a new jail. But nothing has changed for the better. There is no question that we need additional space, we need a newer facility. We have serious infrastructure problems. Like water, sewer, and these kinds of issues put a tremendous strain on a jail."

Moore was found at a home in Osyka, MS, on Monday. The town is located about 23 miles north of Amite.

Moore was being held on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with a deadly drive-by shooting that killed Sandra Butler, 37, of Independence, in February.
