Jury selection begins for Jones County capital murder trial

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Jury selection is underway Monday in Greene County for Justin Blakeney.

Blakeney was indicted in 2010 on capital murder charges in the death of his then girlfriend Lydia Viner's  two-year-old daughter Victora Viner.

The two-year old died two days after she was taken to south central regional medical center in laurel with unknown injuries.

An autopsy later revealed the toddler died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

An affidavit obtained in 2010 by Jones County District Attorny J. Ronald Parrish states that Blakeney admitted he was alone with the baby when she received her fatal injury.

Statements from a confidential informant said to be a member of the Aryan nation told authorities that Blakeney confessed to murdering the girl as a way of gaining membership into the gang.
