MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Authorities in Mesa helped corral a pair of desert tortoises Sunday morning.

Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Landato said one of their officers on patrol came across the reptiles in the road about 8 a.m. near 32nd Street and McKellips.

Landato said the two were found making their way south in the northbound lanes. A slow speed pursuit ensued.

The tortoises were eventually contained by officers and put into a patrol car.

Landato said it was soon learned they had escaped from their home nearby. The two African Spurred Thigh Tortoises were returned safely to their home.

According to Arizona Game & Fish, tortoises like these are called "spur-thighed" because their hind legs have a very large, horny spur-like projection.
