Keeping pets from running away on the 4th of July

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is urging pet owners to take preventive steps to avoid pets running away on the Fourth of July.

Thursday was Fourth of July Preparation Day at the shelter. The event gave them the opportunity to remind the folks that the first days after the holiday is one of the biggest intake days at the shelter because fireworks often make your pets nervous and scared and many times pets will runaway or get lost.

The most important things that can be done are for your pet is to have a collar and a name tag with contact information and if all possible keep your pet indoors.

Shelter manager Ginny Sims says there are other things that can be done to keep your pet from running away.

"Take them for a long walk or play with them in the morning so they get their energy out," said Sims. Take a current picture so that you have one. There are rescues and shelters like Southern Pines that have great powers of social networking to be able to share these posts."

If your pet does runaway call your local shelter to alert them to be on the lookout for it if it is brought in.
