Nashville group examines affordable housing

Posted: Updated:

Whether for rent or mortgage, we spend a lot of money to keep a roof over our heads.

There's a big push in Nashville to keep housing affordable for everyone.

Neighbors packed the Martin Professional Development Center on Monday night to talk about Nashville's explosive growth and change.

One concern is redevelopment is pushing middle- and low-income families out of many neighborhoods.

The goal Monday was to brainstorm ways to build, fund and maintain housing for everyone.

Organizers said the turnout indicates that people do care.

"Some cities are good at making sure there is affordable housing," said James Frasier, an associate professor at Vanderbilt. "Other cities don't do enough. What's nice about Nashville is that with the outpouring of all these people, it sounds like we want to do something."

Nashville Next organized the discussion Monday night.
