HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg-area veterans are being urged to take advantage of a tax-free benefit to help them and their spouses pay for home health care, assisted living or a nursing home. It's called the Non-Service Connected Pension and it was the subject of a seminar Thursday night at the Emeritus at Forrest Park.

John Hays, volunteer veteran advocate with the organization U.S. Senior Vets, spoke to a gathering of several dozen people about the pension and how to file for it.

He said even though it's been around more than 60 years, few veterans have ever heard of it.

"It dates back to 1952," Hays said. "There's actually over $4 billion that's in the coffer for this benefit and it has to be funded every year. And basically, what we do as a non-profit organization is we simply educate people about the benefit and then help people understand how to file for the benefit," he said.

You can learn more about the Non-Service Connected Benefit by going online to www.usseniorvets.com.
