Southern Pines Animal Shelter Adopt a Celeb

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The latest big adoption event of the summer at the Southern Pines Animal Shelter was held Thursday.

Several area celebrities turned out to have their picture taken in a kennel in hopes they could raise their $500 adoption fee through donations. The event is one of many planned for summer as they pursue the goal of saving 1500 lives during June, July, and August as part of the Rachael Ray ASPCA 100 K Challenge,

With the first month of the challenge almost over, the shelter is on track having found homes for nearly 450 animals.

"We're really excited about all the animals we've headed out with new adopters," said Ginny Sims, SPAS manager. "All of then are getting chances through adoptions and transports like our Rescue Wagon through Pet Smart Charities. It's been a really exciting summer so far and we're looking forward to the rest of it."

"To donate to your favorite celebrity go online to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter facebook page or call 601-544-6632. Voting will continue through Sunday.

The shelter is also having a special adoption event this weekend on some of the animals who have been there the longest. Selected animals can be adopted for only $10.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
