(CNN) – Susan Collins became the fourth sitting GOP senator to support same-sex marriage Wednesday.

The Maine Republican announced her support in response to a question from The Bangor Daily News.

"A number of states, including my home state of Maine, have now legalized same-sex marriage, and I agree with that decision," she said.

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights advocacy group, endorsed Collins' re-election Wednesday.

Collins joins Republican senators Mark Kirk of Illinois, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rob Portman of Ohio in expressing support for the marriage equality movement.
