Collins Fire Department assists with oil storage tank fire

JEFFERSON DAVIS COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The Collins Fire Department was called out Sunday to assist with a crude oil storage tank fire near Bassfield Sunday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 1 p.m. at the Carl E. Gungoll Exploration Company on Hathorn Cemetery Road. Bassfield firefighters were the first on the scene and found the tank fully engulfed in flames. After fighting the fire for some time, the decision was made to call Collins for assistance.

"Once we had the water supply in place we began our attack on the fire," said John Pope, Collins Fire Chief. "We were able to get the flames fully extinguished and collapse in under three-minutes. Then we remained on scene with the foam application and cooling operations for approximately another hour to render it safe."

There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The Prentiss Fire Department was also called in to assist.
