Cochran visits Pine Belt, talks about runoff

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - With five days until the Mississippi Senate runoff, and despite divergent poll outcomes, Senator Thad Cochran seemed unruffled before an appearance at Camp Shelby on Thursday.

Before the Camp Shelby event, his campaign bus pulled into a Hattiesburg truck stop off Hwy 49. Cochran spoke to the media about what's going through his mind during the fight for his political life.

"I would prefer to be unopposed for re-election, but, apparently, I will have opposition, and I think that's... That's fine. I'm prepared to discuss whatever issues might be raised," Cochran said.

A new poll from Democratic pollster Chism Strategies shows Cochran leading 48-47 percent, which is a slight pickup for Cochran since June 3. Chism was one of the more accurate polls leading up to the primary on June 3. The runoff is five days away, on Tuesday, June 24.
