Jones County man killed in motorcycle crash

The Following is New Release from Jones County Fire Council:

A Jones County man was killed Wednesday night when his motorcycle ran off the road and crashed into several trees in the Ovett community.

At approximately 8 p.m., emergency medical responders and rescue units from Ovett Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident, which occurred on Tiger Creek Road approximately a half mile from Tiger Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

According to a couple who were following behind on their motorcycles, 55-year-old Howard Murphy had just left the church and was traveling west on Tiger Creek Road on his Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle when he ran off the road, hit a culvert, and flipped several times before crashing into several oak trees.  Murphy was ejected from his bike and landed approximately 20 feet away in the water in a ditch. The couple pulled Murphy out of the water and called 911.

When volunteer emergency medical responders arrived on scene, they began administering CPR. EMServ ambulance service EMS team arrived and CPR continued. Murphy had received severe head trauma from the crash and never regained consciousness.  He was pronounced dead at the scene by Jones County Deputy Coroner Ernest Hollingsworth.

Also responding to the scene were Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Investigator Wayne Black with the Jones County District Attorney's Office, Jones County Sheriff's Department, and Jones County Fire Council Chaplain Brother Drew Blanton.
