Taxi drivers continue to fight new airport regulations

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Earlier this month, the Airport Authority voted to pass a new set of ground transportation rules, that many taxi drivers felt would hurt their businesses. At Wednesday's Airport Authority meeting, several drivers returned to express their concerns.

"I don't understand why they don't dictate, for example, rental cars or selling hamburgers. I don't have a clue," said Eva Veverkova with Royal Cab Company.

Although the resolution has already passed, the drivers are hoping by continuing to show up, the Airport Authority will understand just how big of an issue this is for small independently run companies.

"We're not restricting access for any cab company. Any cab company along the Gulf Coast and South Mississippi that wants to adhere to these standards can get an operating permit here," said Airport Executive Director Clay Williams.

Some of the new policies that are set to go into effect in October require the drivers to carry higher insurance policies, accept credit cards, and charge a lower flat rate.

"In this economy, I do not understand how they can increase our insurance and reduce our rates and expect us to make a living out here," said Leisa Leisy who owns Airport Casino Military Taxi.

Some of these drivers think the new rules are somehow catering to Yellow Cab Company. Williams said that isn't the case.

"These rules and regulations that we've passed, they don't benefit one company over the other. They benefit the consumer," said Williams.

He stands firm that the regulations are just enhancing standards for airport passengers.
