Petal ranked safest city in MS by real estate website

If you're thinking about relocating to the safest city in Mississippi, look no further than your own Pine Belt back yard. According to the popular real estate website, Movoto.com, the City of Petal, also known as 'The Friendly City' was named the safest in the state.

"And that's based on our low crime rate and you know they basically say our crime rate was incredibly low, uh, it's ridiculously low," said Petal Mayor Hal Marx.

In order to find the safest places in Mississippi, the real estate website gathered the latest uniform crime report from the FBI to find crime data.

"It's a big honor for The City of Petal to be recognized this way," Petal assistant police chief Matthew Hiatt said.

"I would like to commend the men and women that make up the Petal Police Department. Thank them for their dedication and their sacrifices that they give each and every day. There's a good rapport between the police department and the city," he added.

"It makes me doggone giddy," said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Valerie Wilson.

"I get so excited when I hear things like this about our city. I think Petal recognizes that we are a diamond down here. Everybody knows we have a special place, and they work together to make sure it continues and grows and prospers."

Petal ranks lowest in murders, violent crimes and property crimes, according to Movoto.com. Petal saw no murders in 2012. There were 706 total crimes per 100,000 people for that year.
