Poplarville hosts annual Blueberry Jubilee

POPLARVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

Downtown Poplarville was painted blue with ribbons, balloons, on Saturday, but the main attraction was the variety of blueberries. Thousands of folks enjoyed quality time in the sun to explore the 31st annual Blueberry Jubilee.

Some jubilee patrons spent the day testing out recipes and exploring the blueberry capitol.

"Enjoy a day of fun, there is a lot of food, a lot of interesting blueberry dishes and just come out for a day of fun," said jubilee patron Tammy Fountain.

The line to grab a drink could've given anyone the blues, but it didn't stop folks from patiently waiting for a blueberry lemonade. One of the biggest hits at the festival was the blueberry lemonade stand.

Polly Arnold has been attending the festival for years, bringing her ice cold blueberry-inspired lemonade to the event.

"We have an 8-acre blueberry farm, and we needed something to do with the blueberries so I came up with blueberry lemonade," said Arnold.

"We have people who come and they say, that's the main reason they come every year, and that is to get our blueberry lemonade. I had people coming from New Orleans today saying I have been waiting for this all year," said Arnold.

Vendors sold everything from blueberry plants, to jams and jellies, to hand-crafted pottery. Festivities kicked off with a 5-k race, followed by an auto show, live music and multiple contests with plenty of southern hospitality.

Even though some festival patrons visited Poplarville for the first time, most seemed to enjoy their day with the second-most popular berry in the United States: The blueberry.
