BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Incumbent Senator Thad Cochran made a couple of campaign stops on the coast Thursday. Earlier this week, rival republican Chris McDaniel swung through a handful of Coast cities to meet with voters, as well.

Thursday, Senator Cochran made his first of two stops at the Mississippi Department of Education conference in Biloxi. He stepped off of his campaign bus and immediately began greeting educators patiently waiting to shake his hand.

"I'm excited that he's here to take an interest. He's always been a big supporter of education and as a teacher, I appreciate that very much, because he's here showing his support," said Rebecca Tyndall, who is a teacher at St. Martin High School.

Both McDaniel and Cochran have been hot on the campaign trail since finding out there would be a runoff election. With the upcoming race, Cochran said the Making Connections in Education conference couldn't have come at a better time.

"Meetings like this remind me how invested a lot of people are in electing people who are going to help straighten out the federal government programs, make them work better, and makes sure our country benefits from the programs," said Cochran.

Cochran and his team made their way through the Mississippi Coast Coliseum shaking hands, and even taking some selfies.

"We appreciate Senator Cochran's support of public education, and we realize the importance of having someone in Washington who can cross party lines to get things done," said Annaleigh Minor who is a teacher in Desoto County.

At the close of the June 3rd primary elections, McDaniel was ahead of Cochran by a little more than 2,000 votes. According to the McDaniel campaign, the latest polls show McDaniel ahead, but Cochran said he is feeling more confident than ever.

"We both came up with about the same amount of votes in the first go round. Now we're seeing who's going to end up in the general election and I have a good feeling, particularly after this event today, that we're going to be able to win," said Cochran.

Cochran made his second campaign stop on the coast at M&M Bank for a meeting with the Jackson County Roundtable. Chris McDaniel will be campaigning in the northern part of the state Friday, starting in Oxford.
