SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC) - Hundreds of Shelby County Schools teachers are dealing with paycheck issues.

July 1 starts the new payroll for SCS and all six newly formed municipal school districts. But for teachers making the move from SCS to their new schools, respective municipalities, it's causing a problem.

It is illegal to be under contract in Tennessee with two different districts at the same time. That means all contract money must be paid out by July 1.

All teachers leaving SCS will receive a paycheck for all of July and part of August, but many teachers are concerned about the high tax rate.

"Their concern was the high tax rate. The district gave them the option of going out on the portal and increasing their deductions so that one check would be taxed at the same rate and not higher," said Keith Williams, the Memphis-Shelby County Education Association Board President.

If a teacher resigned before their contract ended, the district will handle benefits and insurance coverage on a case by case basis.
