MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Alarming new numbers show more than 80 percent of Memphis households have no fathers. An event Sunday is working to bring that number down.

The 4th annual Memphis Training Camp for Dads is a free event being held to help make homes and family life better.

Corey Johnson leads the community-focused programming at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, which is a sponsor of the event.

"All the workshops are around improving fatherhood as a craft," said Johnson.

Each workshop focuses on big issues facing fathers.

"We want to improve relationships. There's a workshop regarding daughter relationships to help communication skills, information regarding how the dad can be most effective in the life of his child or being involved in school. There's even a course right now on Internet safety," said Johnson.

And Johnson adds, the event isn't just for new or struggling dads.

"Someone can learn from that person and the work that they've done. It doesn't help the community get better if you've got all this great insight and you don't share it," he said.

The workshops will be held at the Fogelman Center on the University of Memphis campus, and WMC Action News 5's Andrew Douglas is a co-host of the event.

It will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. There's free breakfast, free lunch, and free parking.
