Woman rescued hours after she crashed on interstate

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Firefighters had to feverishly work to cut out an injured motorist from her crushed car.

The vehicle rolled down an Interstate 470 embankment near Blue Ridge Boulevard.

Firefighters were able to free the woman from the vehicle about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. She told police that the crash occurred about 7 a.m. She said she blacked out and only came to hours later.

At that time, she told police she called for help.

The woman was seriously injured but is expected to be OK, authorities said. She was conscious the entire time and responded to commands from firefighters.

She underwent surgery and is recovering Friday in an area hospital from her injuries.

A spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department said firefighters were alerted shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle was found down a 100-foot embankment, and was not visible from the highway.

Firefighters had to use elaborate measures to stabilize the vehicle and free the woman from the wreckage.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
