Laurel holds groundbreaking for splash pad

A ground breaking was held Thursday for the construction of a splash pad, a recreational water fountain, at the Laurel Sportsplex.

It comes in way of $21,000 collected by donations to the Leadership Jones County. Labor for the project is being donated by the Laurel Parks and Recreations Department, while material for the splash pad is being donated by area businesses.

"A splash pad brings people together," Joanna Newcomb said.

Newcomb is with Leadership Jones County and said the project was the result of a meeting held last year by the group.

The Laurel Sportsplex was chosen for the splash pad because of its central location.

"It's a place where Laurel people can enjoy it and Jones County people can enjoy it as well." Newcomb said.

Construction of the splash pad is expected to be completed by the end of August this year.
