MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) – A double shooting in Memphis leaves one person dead and another in critical condition.

An investigation is unfolding in the 700 block of North Watkins Street and for one woman in the neighborhood it's the second time violence has hit home just this year.

Memphis police say the man killed around 10:30 Wednesday night was driving his car down N. Watkins when he was shot and eventually crashed into a light pole.

A couple of blocks down on N. Watkins police found a man who'd been shot twice. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

WMC Action News 5 spoke with Annette Stewart who says the man who survived is her child's father. She says when the bullets started flying her instincts to protect her family kicked in.

"All of a sudden I just started hearing a whole lot of shots I'm talking about a lot of shots. I told my granddaughter to get down with the baby and I tried to look out the window … it started shooting again," said Stewart.

This shooting opens up old wounds for Stewart because it's the same street where her pregnant granddaughter was killed just over six months ago.

Shakerri Stewart-Depree, 19, died in January after the car she was riding in slammed into trees, kept going and hit a house.

Her family says the driver ran off and was never caught. They've been fighting for justice ever since.

"I don't like this street anymore. My granddaughter was killed on this street and the person responsible for her death is still out there," Stewart said. "So I need justice for her and for John."

The John, who she's referring to, is the man recovering at the hospital from gunshot wounds and Stewart believes he was targeted.

Police have no suspect and no motive for this shooting, but police have detained some people for questioning.
