After pit stops at JCJC, East Central and Holmes Community College, Deion Ulmer of Laurel was drafted by the LA Dodgers in the 26th round of the MLB draft this weekend.
"I was actually driving to go workout with one of my friends and my dad called and asked if I heard the news. I told him no, and he said you're a Dodger son," Ulmer said at his parents house.
"I just broke down in tears right there and it's just a great feeling."
Deion's father, Elvin, shared his thoughts on the moment his son was drafted by Los Angeles.
"We [were] actually watching on the computer, MLB network, and when they called his name my wife just kind of hit the ceiling and she was running through the house screaming and hollering and to be honest with you, I was just in shock and kind of sat there."
"I was speechless."
Deion said his dad played a major role in his love for the game and how far he's come in pursuing his passion.
"He's really one of the main reasons I've gotten here. He introduced me to the game. He taught me how to play the game the right way and he told me to stick with it."
"He told me he knew that I had a special talent for the game and I just need to keep pursuing the game."
His mother, Lisa, spoke about the role she and her husband played in raising their son.
"I think parenting is so important. It's a very important job and role and I take it very seriously."
"It makes me feel wonderful as a mom to know such an impact I've had, and knowing as well that my husband as a dad has made a great impact on Deion's life."
"We are very proud of him."
