Nashville teen discovers, reunites with her egg donor

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 16-year-old Nashville girl decided she wanted to find out more about her own conception, specifically the identity of the egg donor. After tireless work, she's found that and much more.

Not only did Brittan Gilmore find her egg donor, but she also met three half-sisters she never knew she had.

There are no secrets in the Gilmore home. Before Brittan even began piano lessons she was told that her mom, Janet Schreibman, was impregnated with a donor egg.

Schreibman said she never once thought about keeping it a secret from Brittan.

"These children, if they ultimately find out about it, they've become resentful and feel betrayed. And I never wanted her to feel that way. I thought she deserved to know her story from the very beginning," Schreibman said.

That wasn't so easy. Egg donors are confidential. It is anonymous in which the files are locked.

The only lead was a website for people who voluntarily enter their information. Even that is a total long shot, but Brittan had one possible clue.

"I copied her username and put it into Google and got a Pinterest account. And that led to a Facebook account," Brittan said.

There was a match from a woman named JoLana Talbot.

"And I said, 'You might be my egg donor,' and we went from there," Brittan said.

Next came a meeting arranged on Katie Couric's talk show, which airs Wednesday, in a moment Brittan will never forget.

"We hugged and cried. And then they surprised me with my sisters coming out. That was really exciting. I had no idea not what to expect," Brittan said.

The next three days the families hung out in New York, and it was as if they had known each other all their lives.

But make no mistake, Brittan knows who her real mom is - it's Schreibman.

"She dealt with me for 16 years," Brittan said, laughing. "Yep, she's mom."

See the big reunion for yourself on the Katie show at 2 p.m. Wednesday. It took several years and some pretty amazing detective work, but what a payoff.
