The Southern Miss Department of Biological Sciences and the USM Foundation celebrated the opening of the Natural Sciences Collection Building at its Lake Thoreau Environmental Learning Center in Hattiesburg on Tuesday.
The new building will support classes and research of the university's Lake Thoreau Environmental Center, which is managed by the university's Department of Biological Sciences.
The building includes a fish collection, houses 30,000 plant specimens, and houses the official plant specimen collections for Camp Shelby and Camp McCain.
The new building also includes a classroom and research lab.
Michael Davis, Director of the Lake Thoreau Environmental Center, says the project wouldn't have been made possible without community involvement.
