BEND, OR (KPTV) -

The Two Bulls wildfire burning near Bend now covers 6,800 acres as evacuees await word on when it's OK to return home.

More than 800 firefighters have been called in to battle the wildfire, and 11 helicopters are helping from above. Firefighters say the warm, dry weather is making it difficult to keep the fire from spreading.

"There's a lot of manzanita and a lot of brush we have to get underneath and find it all," said firefighter Ken Boles.

The fire was 25 percent contained by Monday evening.

Still, the fire was threatening 250 homes, which were under evacuation orders. Susan Mondry is one of the level-three evacuees. She was forced to leave her home with only what she could carry and fit into her car.

"They came through the neighborhood and said, 'We need you to get packed up,'" she said.

Most of Mondry's important possessions are safe, but not everything.

"Some of the things that I did cherish that I kind of forgot about or were too deep to get out, [I'd] be sad about that," she said.

No homes or structures have been damaged.

The current areas under evacuation notices include:

Level III evacuation notice (leave immediately):

  • Skyliners Road area outside of Bend

Level II evacuation notice (be ready to go at a moment's notice):

  • Area south of Shevlin Park, west of Mt. Washington, and north of Century Drive
  • Saddleback Subdivision (downgraded from Level III)

Level I evacuation notice (voluntary, keep an eye on conditions):

  • Remainder of Northwest Crossing (area east of Mt. Washington Drive)
  • Area north of Shevlin Park, west of Mt. Washington Drive

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at High Desert Middle School on 27th Street, and a livestock shelter is open at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond.
