Former Hattiesburg city employee shoots ex-wife, then kills himself

PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

A former City of Hattiesburg Director of Water and Sewer is dead after a Friday night domestic assault in Petal. According to authorities, Matthew Boutwell, 46, allegedly took his own life after shooting his ex-wife in the lower back, at a residence on Chatau drive.

According to Petal Police investigator Ken Bullock, the victim in the shooting was house sitting at her mother's home when Boutwell showed up. Investigators are still working to piece together what occurred inside the home that led to Boutwell allegedly shooting the victim in the back.

Investigators stated that a gun and two spent rounds were recovered at the scene and that Boutwell also left a lengthy letter.

According to Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem, the body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy. Authorities stated the female victim involved was transported to Forrest General Hospital where she was taken into surgery and listed in stable condition.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree released a statement about Matt Boutwell on Monday saying his prayers are with everyone affected, and he reminded city employees of the city's free employee assistance program, which is available 24/7

Police say former Hattiesburg Director of Water and Sewer Matt Boutwell shot his ex-wife before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide.

The victim is now out of the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Authorities responded to a domestic call on Chateau Drive in Petal on Friday night. Investigators recovered the weapon used in the incident and a letter left by Boutwell.

Boutwell was recently terminated from his job at the water department. Sources say he had returned several times and paced around the building.
