Troopers: Teen girl sent text just before deadly crash in Union Co

MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

A 17-year-old high school senior was killed after her Jeep flipped after going off the side of the road in Monroe.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 17-year-old Samantha Ann Windham was killed in a crash along the 3000-block of Poplin Road just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Troopers say the vehicle went off the side of the road, hit a culvert and flipped over. Windham was partially ejected from the vehicle.

She was not wearing a seatbelt and speeding according to troopers.

Investigators say Windham had just left from a Monroe pizza restaurant.

Troopers told WBTV they believe Windham sent a text message just before the crash.

"We found a text message that was sent 9:36 pm," Master Trooper John Burgin said. "The collision was found at 9:39PM."

Her family told reporter Dedrick Russell that she wasn't texting, that she knew better than to do that. And she was a safe driver.

Windham was less than two weeks away from graduation. She was a senior at Porter Ridge High School. Grief counselors were present at the school to help students cope with the death.

Students also painted the school rock in rememberance of their classmate.

"I had only met her a few times," Friend Allie Mull said. "But everytime I did, she had the best personality. She was so sweet. She was a great girl - so hard to believe."

Friends gathered for a vigil Monday night where the crash happened. They brought flowers and said they receieved a sign in the sky showing Samantha was okay.

"We saw a cross when we were putting the flowers down," Friend Kassi LeClair said. "And we knew she was there. We knew she was letting us know she was ok. She was happy. She was better."

Samantha's funeral will be Thursday at First Baptist Church Indian Trail.
