HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Police Dept. is gearing up for its 5th annual Police Athletic League Summer Camp Program which begins next Tuesday.
About 90 children, ages 8-14, have registered for the eight week program at the Ben McNair Center. Activities will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
They'll include football, basketball, swimming and bowling. Educational activities will also be available, focusing on drug awareness, health and hygiene and good decision-making.
"They're getting younger and younger every year, the people that we arrest, that is and so, this is our way of reinvesting back into the community, so that we bridge that gap between law enforcement and juvenile," said Capt. Ricky Myers, of the Community Relations Division of the Hattiesburg Police Dept.
Other Police Athletic League programs in Mississippi are in Gulfport, Tupelo and Jackson.
