(RNN) – The GOP-controlled U.S. House of Representatives early Friday voted in favor of keeping the federal government from interfering in the rights of states to OK the use of marijuana for medical purposes, the Associated Press has reported.

The 219-189 vote occurred during debate over funding for the U.S. Department of Justice.

On Thursday, Minnesota's governor signed a bill making marijuana legal for medicinal purposes, CNN reported.

Minnesota is the 22 state to do so, but there are major restrictions, as is the case in many states.

Marijuana is the most common illicit drug used in America, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
